Even if it is using an older codec, it still sounds great.ĪM does have spatial audio and Dolby Atmos but after using both for months it was really more of a gimmick to me than anything else. Apple’s AAC format is quite impressive and sounds darn good but it’s hard to beat that constant 320kb/s streaming rate. AM has their AAC at 256kb/s and it’s variable. Spotify streams their songs at 320kb/s and it’s constant. But you need a special pair of headphones to even listen to lossless, and that’s something that I don’t have an interest in pursuing.

Now with lossless, obviously AM wins bc Spotify doesn’t even have that feature. I spent weeks comparing the audio quality of the two and I couldn’t tell the difference. I was on Spotify for years, then switched to AM for over a year, and now I’m back on Spotify. But when you turn it off, it sounds exactly the same as AM.

This makes the audio seem quieter and not as dynamic. Most of the time the quality difference can be chalked up to users not turning off the “normalize audio” option in Spotify.
